Organic vs non-organic. Worth the price?


Is it healthier to eat organic than non-organic? quick answer – Perhaps


To be classified as organic it must be grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, or GMO’s. But is it worth the higher price?


Not necessarily. There is no solid evidence that eating organic is healthier than non-organic. Well, it would be difficult to directly assess people’s biological markers such as blood inflammatory, cholesterol, and glucose markers.

Over a long period of time there is evidence showing positive outcomes such as fertility, allergies, and immune health. But this can be explained as the people who are able to buy organic foods generally have healthier lifestyles.


Some or most Organic foods do contain more micronutrient. 


But, more importantly! With less than 7% of Australians getting their ‘5 veg n 2 fruit’ a day. Its more important to eat fruits and vegetables first.




Pesticide are used on non-organic foods however, usage is way below levels that could be harmful. however, some foods contain higher amounts of pesticide

  • Berries

  • Hops (beer)

  • Potatoes

  • Oats  - glyphosate

  • Low quality rice

  • Peaches

  • Broccoli


Foods with a lot less  (because we don’t eat the skin)

  • Avocadoes

  • Mangos

  • Onions



Summary

more importantly than eating organic fruit and vegetables, is to first eat the recommended amount:

5 veg

2 fruit

per day


organic foods do contain less problematic pesticides and fertilisers and have higher amounts of micronutrients. So if you can afford it, sure buy organic, if not, no stress, its such a small difference in overall health when you consider the 4 pillars of health

  • Sleep

  • Mental health / relationships

  • Nutrition
